Getting your 7-D License:

All of our drivers are required by law to have a 7-D licensed issued to them by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles before they are allowed to transport school children. This is not the same as a CDL with a Passenger Endorsement. However, a CDL with a School Bus endorsement combined with a School Bus Certificate may be used in lieu of a 7-D License. None of our vehicles require a CDL to drive them. A 7-D license can be obtained by successfully passing a short written exam at your local Mass RMV branch and submitting a completed application for 7-D Pupil Transportation, a 7-D School Pupil Medical Certificate completed by a licensed physician, and an application fee of $15.00. An additional fee of $15.00 is charged each time you take/retake the exam. You are not required to retake the exam upon renewal of your 7-D license; however 7-D licenses must be renewed on an annual basis. For training manual for obtaining your 7-D license, a 7-D license application and medical certificate or for more information on obtaining your 7-D license, please refer to the links below:

How to Obtain your STEP (SDIP) Rating:

Your Step (SDIP) rating, also known as your Driving Merit score, is just one factor we take into consideration for prospective employees. There are two ways to obtain your STEP rating. First, you can contact your auto insurance agency and have them send you a copy of your driving record. Your STEP rating will be included on the record. (Depending on your insurance agency, your STEP rating may also be indicated on your auto insurance policy). Second, you can also contact the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) and they will provide your STEP rating for a small fee of $6.00. You can contact the Mass RMV for your driving record by following the corresponding link below. For New Hampshire residents, your can obtain your driver record through the New Hampshire Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) by submitting a Release of Motor Vehicle Records form and a fee of $15.00. For Rhode Island residents, you can request a copy of your driver record through the Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website or at a local DMV branch. CPR/First Aid Requirements:

In accordance with Massachusetts state law, all 7D licensed drivers are required to be CPR and First Aid certified. Van Pool does provide free training sessions for both First Aid and CPR certification and re-certification several times annually for its employees only. This is not a requirement upon your date of hire, however if hired, it must be completed as soon as possible. CPR and First Aid certifications are good for 2 years after completion of training. Please contact your local Van Pool Office for details on upcoming CPR/First aid Training Sessions.
